Aviva: Businesses are failing to conform to fire regulations

Businesses in the UK are failing to comply with fire legislation by neglecting to conduct risk assessments, according to new research.

Figures recently publish by insurance firm Aviva have highlighted the need for effective facilities management after Fire and Rescue Service were found to have issued 34,500 informal notifications in the last three years.

Over the same period, the authority has issued 3,200 enforcement notices, 442 prohibition notices and 84 alteration notices, according to the data.

The Figures also revealed that 40 per cent of UK businesses are failing to meet the necessary requirements.

Andrew Couch, health and safety consultant for Aviva, said: "Often businesses tell us that they either don't have the time, don't know where to begin when it comes to fire safety, or they need additional support and advice from someone who knows what they are talking about.

"But failing in the basic responsibilities of completing fire risk assessments means that firms are not only breaking the law but also not managing the hazards on their premises."
