Welsh government issues health and safety call

December 9th 16:32 Health and Safety

The Welsh Assembly Government has called on businesses to improve their health and safety standards, something that could be achieved through the use of effective facilities management.

Over 1,600 people suffered serious workplace injuries in the country during 2008-09 and first minister Rhodri Morgan has signed a pledge to bring this figure down that has been drawn up by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Mr Morgan called on firms to make investments that will allow them to "better manage workplace risks," adding: "Work-related accidents can be avoided and it is important that people are made to feel safe while going about their job."

HSE board member Sandy Blair noted that dangers still exist in the workplace even in the current economic climate and urged businesses to build on the improvements that have been made in recent years.

The pledge has already been signed by a number of companies and bodies, including the Department for Work and Pensions, BT, Parcel Force and Royal Mail.ADNFCR-2717-ID-19503999-ADNFCR
