Waste management firm fined over workplace injury

December 18th 21:29 Health and Safety

The importance of facilities managements at waste and recycling facilities has been highlighted by the prosecution of one firm.

A man who visited the Donald Ward recycling plant in Ilkeston had to have his leg amputated when he was hit by a steel girder, resulting in Donald Ward Ltd being fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £1,572 in costs at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court.

Inspector at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Andrew Turner said that firms "have duties to ensure that hazards created by their work activities are managed such that they do not put the health or safety of employees, or others, at risk".

Failing to do so increases the likelihood of incidents such as this happening, he cautioned.

In related news, the injury of a man who lost two fingers while cleaning a food mixing machine resulted in the owner of the site, Ravendale Foods, recently being fined £7,500.ADNFCR-2717-ID-19521614-ADNFCR
