SMEs 'will waste £3bn on energy'

December 30th 10:12 Cost Management

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) could waste as much as £3 billion next year due to poor facilities management, one energy firm has said.

According to npower, many firms are losing money without knowing it as they are unaware of areas where they could improve efficiency.

It urged firms to adopt a number of energy-saving techniques in 2010, such as installing a real-time energy monitor to show where money is being spent, utilising stand-by options on computer monitors and considering moving to laptops, which use around ten per cent of the power an average PC consumes.

"For many small enterprises the priority has to be running the business, particularly during these tough economic times, meaning there is little time to dedicate to saving energy," remarked npower's Allan Robinson, adding that taking small steps can make a big difference to costs.

Earlier this month, the Confederation of British Industry claimed that UK businesses and households are collectively wasting £15 million a day due to poor energy efficiency.ADNFCR-2717-ID-19534208-ADNFCR
