Smart meters to assist with efficient facilities management?

December 3rd 17:24 Cost Management

Consumers can save money by using smart meters to measure their electricity consumption, it has been suggested.

Commenting after it was announced that the government has allocated £6 million to the development of such technology, energy and climate change minister Lord Hunt said implementing them will "put the power in people's hands".

Introducing smart meters may enable businesses to bring the cost of their facilities management down and Lord Hunt explained that using them in conjunction with new smart grids can also assist with preventing climate change.

"Smart grids will help manage the massive shift to low carbon electricity such as wind, nuclear and clean fossil fuels," he remarked.

These will have the benefits of providing energy more efficiency and reliably, which in turn will cut the cost of both generating and transmitting electricity, the government said.

The positives of smart meters have been outlined after a survey revealed many firms are unprepared for the new Carbon Reduction Commitment, which is due to be introduced in April 2010.ADNFCR-2717-ID-19493300-ADNFCR
