North-east businesses inspected in health and safety clampdown

December 15th 08:28 Health and Safety

Businesses in the north-east of England may be looking to improve their facilities management following a crackdown by Sunderland City Council and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Over 65 firms were included in the inspections, however just one was issued with a prohibition notice.

This was relating to dangerous and unguarded machinery at the enterprise's premises and resulted in work there stopping immediately.

In addition, 15 improvement notices were served to the landlords of several of the industrial estates that were visited who are having action taken against them with regards to health and safety regulation.

Jonathan Wills of the HSE said that the body was "very pleased" to see companies in Sunderland are paying attention to the importance of good health and safety.

However, he stated that it is "important to stress though that more needs to be done", adding that this was highlighted by the number of improvement notices that were handed to firms.

The checks began early last month, with the aim of improving safety on Sunderland's industrial estates.ADNFCR-2717-ID-19514501-ADNFCR
