London construction firms 'must make sites secure'

December 18th 20:01 Health and Safety

Improved facilities management could be needed if construction companies in London are to respond adequately to a new warning from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Head of operations, construction London Richard Boland said that organisations need to do as much as possible to prevent members of the public from gaining access to their sites, explaining that children often look on them as "playgrounds".

His comments were made with specific regards to Christmas, with the HSE looking to reduce the potential for accidents during the festive period.

"Before closing the site for the holiday, contractors should carry out checks to ensure loose material is secure and scaffolding is properly supported. It should be checked particularly after bad weather," Mr Boland remarked.

Earlier this month, the HSE issued a call to companies to ensure they take proper precautions with scaffolding, an issue also highlighted in its latest warning with regards to the risk of collapse.ADNFCR-2717-ID-19521637-ADNFCR
