Importance of facilities management highlighted by HSE prosecution

December 16th 16:27 Health and Safety

Companies have been reminded of the importance of facilities management following the prosecution of a County Durham business.

Ravendale Foods was issued a fine of £7,500 after one of its employees had two fingers amputated by a mixing machine.

The accident occurred in October last year when the 22-year-old was attempting to clear meat from the opening of a mixer on to a conveyor.

According to Cain Mitchell from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the injuries could have been prevented if the firm had identified the risks associated with the machine and ensured suitable guarding was in place.

He added: "Although this young man underwent surgery to re-attach one of his two fingers, he has only recently gone back to work and is still unable to do his normal job."

The HSE exists to protect employees and members of the public from risks that arise as a result of workplace activities.
