Ensure scaffolding is safe, urges HSE

December 3rd 18:00 Health and Safety

Business need to ensure they follow proper precautions when using scaffolding, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned.

The body made the statement following the successful prosecution of Pullan Development (Selby) of Sheffield, which was fined £15,000 in the city's crown court after an incident last year in which it was found to be using "extremely unsafe" scaffolding.

Health and safety failings were again discovered when the Sheffield Ski Village construction site where the business was working was inspected three months later.

David Bradley of the HSE said the fine should serve as a warning to construction companies to safely manage risk, something that effective facilities management can assist with.

"Falls from height remain the largest cause of fatal and serious injuries in the construction industry," he added.

This is the latest in a serious of successful prosecutions related to scaffolding by the HSE, which has also won cases against Bracknell Roofing of Sevenoaks and MWS Scaffolding Services - which was operating at a site in London - over the past few weeks.ADNFCR-2717-ID-19494646-ADNFCR
