IT "key" to facilities management cost reduction

November 13th 09:35 Cost Management

IT could help companies manage their facilities management cost reduction, it has been claimed.

According to Nick Robinson, technical operation lead at networking and communications technology and services company Cisco, the technology will be able to help businesses save money by tracking how much energy their buildings are consuming.

Speaking at the Green IT Expo 2009 at the Barbican Exhibition Centre in London, he said that carbon reduction commitment legislation coming into affect in April 2010 will affect 5,000 businesses in the UK.

He added: "Information technology can be integrated with building management systems … to give organisations a much greater visibility of what they are consuming."

Mr Robinson went on to state that some solutions are already available, adding that that they will have a "massive impact" on the way in which buildings use energy.

The Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme will begin in April next year, providing a financial incentive to reduce energy use by putting a price on carbon emissions.
