Scottish harbours are to be targeted by Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors in a bid to improve and raise awareness of the working conditions in the workplaces.
The investigations, which may be of interest to those involved in facilities management, will target work involving the lifting and movement of heavy goods in the country's north-east and Highlands.
According to Aberdeen-based HSE inspector John Radcliffe, 50 people are killed and more than 1,500 severely injured in accidents involving lifting and workplace transport.
"During our inspections we're keen to see how local employers are promoting health and safety using active leadership from managers and by involving staff," he said.
Earlier this week, the HSE ordered Laing O'Rourke Infrastructure of Kent and SGB Services of Leatherhead to pay a total of £105,000 following an accident at the site in 2005 in which one man died after being hit by a concrete slab.
