A company from Cambridgeshire has been fined £1,000 after being found guilty of failing to take out compulsory insurance.
Dipak Kumar Kantial Solanki, the owner of Melbourn Stores, did not produce an Employers' Liability Compulsory Insurance (ELCI) certificate when his store was visited by a council environmental heath officer in April.
An ELCI is a requirement for all employers and Mr Solanki pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to have insurance at Cambridge Magistrates Court last week.
"Employers' Liability Compulsory Insurance is designed to protect employees and ensure they are covered if there is an accident in the workplace," explained Andrew Saunders of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
He added that the case should be "a warning to all employers" of the seriousness of the issue.
Last week, the HSE issued fines to two construction firms as a result of an accident that took place at the site of Heathrow's terminal 5 in 2005.
