HSE draws up crane regulation proposals

November 27th 17:19 Health and Safety

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has announced details of a new register that may interest those operating in the construction facilities management industry.

Following a three-month consultation, it has drawn up a series of new measures that will apply to the use of cranes on building sites.

The new regulations are designed to be easy to understand and have been produced in response to growing worries over the safety of cranes among the public, with trade unions, construction contractors and other stakeholders all providing feedback on the suggestions.

Under the new terms a number of pieces of information would have to be provided to the HSE, including the address at which the crane would be used, its owners and the date on which it last had a safety inspection.

Ministers now have to approve the changes and chief inspector of construction at the HSE Philip White said that running a public consultation on the issue helped to "develop a proportionate response to an established risk".

According to HSE figures, over 2,800 people in Britain have been killed working on construction sites over the past 25 years.ADNFCR-2717-ID-19484312-ADNFCR
