Hazardous light consultation to help with facilities management?

November 12th 16:56 Health and Safety

A new consultation regarding the use of artificial light in the workplace has been released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The document, which may be of interest to companies involved with facilities management, outlines how it will enforce a European Union (EU) directive designed to protect employees from harmful sources of light.

It will ensure standards remain constant across the EU, helping workers to avoid harm by being exposed to UV radiation and lasers, which can damage the skin and eyes.

Those interested in the regulations have been advised to submit their comments to the HSE by February 2010, with the rules set to be introduced in April.

"HSE wants to ensure all workers benefit from this Directive and the draft regulations present a good opportunity to meet our aim." chair Judith Hackitt remarked, adding that they will have an impact on a "small number" of firms.

The body recently conducted a number of inspections of companies in Sunderland, offering advice on issues such as working at height and transport safety.ADNFCR-2717-ID-19457504-ADNFCR
