Construction workers offered silicosis advice

November 23rd 09:26 Health and Safety

Lanarkshire construction workers have been invited to an event that may be of interest to facilities management firms in the area.

It has been organised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and will focus on the risk of silicosis - a potentially lethal disease that arises as a result of breathing in dust containing crystalline silica - and how it can be avoided.

Information regarding the correct equipment to use and a film highlighting the risks will be on offer at Beatsons Building Supplies on Glencryan Road, South Carbrain, Cumbernauld and the HSE's Pamela McKenzie said a number of "practical steps" can be taken to mitigate the threat of employees developing the condition.

Dust containing crystalline silica can be created when working with materials such as concrete or paving blocks and Ms McKenzie stated that the event, which takes place tomorrow (November 24th), "aims to provide workers with the knowledge they need to help them protect their health".

Earlier this month, the HSE issued a warning over the importance of employing a gas fitter who has the necessary qualifications.ADNFCR-2717-ID-19474309-ADNFCR
