Schools 'should focus on improving waste management'

October 27th 17:12 Cost Management

Schools and colleges should improve their facilities management to cut down on waste production.

This is according to programme manager of NetRegs Richard Martin, who told Edie that reducing rubbish output is the one area educational institutions should focus on if they are to minimise their environmental impact.

He explained that on average, there are around 12 million people in some form of education across the UK every day, meaning the sector has an "enormous" effect on the environment.

"Without a doubt, waste is the biggest problem," Mr Martin told the news source, adding that this not only includes packaging and food, but also more obscure materials like hazardous items from chemistry laboratories.

Earlier this month, Waste Watch noted that many organisations are not aware of the benefits recycling can have, with a spokeswoman for the charity commenting that reusing materials can save money, as well as help protect the environment.ADNFCR-2717-ID-19429527-ADNFCR
