Could facilities management have helped improve workplace safety?

The safety of workplaces in the UK increased during the last year, new figures have revealed, something that could be attributed to improved facilities management.

According to data from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), a total of 29.3 million working days per year were lost as a result of injury or illness between April 2008 and March 2009.

In the previous 12-month period, the figure was 33.9 million and the amount of workplace fatalities also decreased, dropping from 233 to a record low of 180.

Chair of the HSE Judith Hackitt said that the statistics were "encouraging", but warned that it is still important to maintain high levels of health and safety.

"Protecting people from harm caused by work remains important irrespective of the economic climate," she stated.

Earlier this month, the HSE issued a new tool aimed at helping small to medium-sized businesses improve their safety standards.

The electronic pack includes risk assessment templates and a list of health and safety requirements.ADNFCR-2717-ID-19431918-ADNFCR
