Companies 'spending less on facilities management'

October 27th 17:12 Cost Management

Spending on facilities management has fallen as a result of the economic climate, new figures have revealed.

According to a study by NB Real Estate, the amount of money spent on maintenance in the commercial sector dropped to £3.2 billion between the final three months of 2007 to the second quarter of 2009.

This equates to a fall of 22 per cent and director of building consultancy at the firm Bob Cooke noted that many companies have seen increased pressure on their finances as a result of the credit crunch.

"Tenants are becoming less diligent with property maintenance," he remarked, something that could see businesses missing out on improved energy efficiency.

Mr Cooke added that failing to keep up with facilities management could also result in high repair bills in the future and increase the risk of health and safety breaches.

Enterprises could be forced to make improvements to their buildings following new proposals put forward by the Committee on Climate Change, which would see all commercial properties required to hold a Display Energy Certificate.ADNFCR-2717-ID-19429534-ADNFCR
